Style Identity vs the Three-Word Method, and How to Use Yours in Practice
Your Style Identity is three words that describe your style, grounded in who you are. To use it, make sure all three are present in every outfit, then adjust the balance between them for the occasion and your mood.
How is Style Identity different from the three-word method?
The three-word method was popularised by stylist Allison Bornstein. Each of your three words has a different job. A practical word comes from the clothes you reach for most. An aspirational word comes from the looks you save and want to grow toward. An emotional word captures how you want your clothes to make you feel. It's a brilliant shortcut, and it made a lot of people think about their style for the first time.
I believe fashion is self-expression first of all and how we dress should reflect who we are. So we start with the person - your character, values, lifestyle and a bit of your visual preferences. Who are you? What matters to you? What does your day actually look like? Which pieces do you love, and which would you never wear, and why? And then translate that into what it means for your style.
We also land on three adjectives, because three words are simple, memorable and easy to talk about. Together they capture your full essence as an individual, because none of us is just one thing, and help translate it into what it means for your style.
What's also important is that it is not about "who you aspire to be", but rather who you actually are and appreciating that - being yourself in what you wear is at the heart of it. That's what we call your Style Identity.
So to recap:
The three-word method
Starts with: your most-worn clothes, saved looks and how you want to feel
Each word is: a different role, practical, aspirational or emotional
Grounded in: your clothes, and who you want to become
While KinraLab Style Identity:
Starts with: your character, values and lifestyle, a bit of visual preferences
Each word is: representing a part of you; together, your full individuality
Grounded in: who you are, translated into style
That combination, that tension is what makes your style unique
My Style Identity is Bold, Refined, Sleek. Each word comes from who I am:
Bold: I’m decisive, assertive and direct. In style, that means sharp shapes, architectural silhouettes and strong colours.
Refined: I’m a perfectionist. Nothing undone, fine finishing.
Sleek: I value honesty and integrity. Clean lines, nothing fussy.
The combination is what makes your style unique. Your own blend of those qualities creates a tension in every outfit, and that tension is what makes an outfit interesting. Knowing your style identity makes it easy to build that kind of outfits.
So how does it work in practice?
Building outfits with three words style identity
All three words should be present in the outfit, not in every garment. One piece can carry Bold, another Refined, another Sleek. But it doesn't mean you will dress the same way every day and for every occasion.
You might feel more "Bold" today, less "Refined" and a bit "Sleek". While tomorrow when going to an important formal meeting, you might tone down "Bold" and increase "Refined" and "Sleek".
Let me show you a few examples:

Left: Travelling outfit - airport and long haul flight require something more comfortable and easygoing. But it doesn't mean you should wear sweatpants and have zero personality in it. Balloon black trousers are Sleek & Bold, t-shirt with elegant knot and burgundy leather bag are Refined, I make it even more Bold with zebra-print sneakers and more Refined & Sleek with gold jewellery.
Middle: An important, more formal presentation at my work: I'd wear platform shoes and cobalt ring and chunky earrings for a hint of "Bold", but mainly stay "Refined" and "Sleek" through the outfit itself.
Right: A brunch with friends - keeping it "Bold" through the chunky silver sneakers, "Refined" through the burgundy suede shoulder bag and skirt texture, and "Sleek" through the clean white t-shirt and no fussy elements.
Three very different outfits. Through all of them, I stay true to my style. I know which elements must be present for me to feel good, and I make each outfit my own.
That's Style Identity in practice: all three words present in every outfit, in your own blend, moving with you across occasions and moods.

FAQs
Does every piece need to match all three words?
No. The outfit carries all three, not each garment. One piece can be more Bold while another is Refined.
Can I change my blend from day to day?
Yes! Occasion and mood change which word leads. What stays is that all three are present.
Is Style Identity the same as the three-word method?
Both use three adjectives. In the three-word method, each word has a role: practical, aspirational and emotional. In Style Identity, all three describe your style, translated from your character, values and lifestyle. Creating your signature blend.
