How to Make Your Wardrobe Work for You: Start With Signature Formulas
To make your wardrobe work for you, start with two or three signature outfit formulas that express your Style Identity. Rotate them until getting dressed feels easy, then add more over time.
What is an outfit formula?
An outfit formula is a repeatable structure for an outfit: the shapes, proportions and types of pieces that always work for you. The pieces change. The structure and its combination stays.
Once you know your formulas, you stop starting from zero every morning. You also shop with a clear question: which formula does this piece fit?
Is it the same as capsule wardrobe?
Not really. Most capsule wardrobe lists give everyone the same essentials. But a white shirt and straight jeans won't work for every Style Identity. A minimal capsule and a creative capsule have nothing in common.
Your formulas are shaping your wardrobe, essentially defining your own, unique capsule. The one that makes pieces work together easily, because you know exactly how to put it into an outfit and why these pieces are right for you.
How to find your outfit formulas
Have clarity on your style identity - which are the qualities that should come through and learn how each is translated in what you wear (read our past articles about this - Finding Your Personal Style and Style Identity in Practice).
Define the "signature" blend you like of those elements. The colour you want, the shapes, the statement accessory - whatever is right for your style. KinraLab Style Tools help you figure this out easily.
Build 2-3 formulas that would work across occasions and know how you can dial it up or down.
Have a few pieces that work for these formulas, not just one. This way it won't feel repetitive, formula is the same, but pieces that shape it would rotate.
My example - two signature formulas
Formula 1: Shaped volume at the bottom (think balloon-leg trousers or wide-leg jeans, there is volume but it is structured, not flowing). Paired with a slim top with fine texture. Finished with hoop earrings and a statement ring, keeping shoes simple but still structured (love a pointed toe flats).
Formula 2: Straight shape in one colour (black is always my go-to) - can be a dress or trousers with a top. Paired with a layer that adds a bit of drama or structure - e.g. a cape-style top that layers well or a blazer or a vest with strong shoulders. That adds the volume & structure I am looking for, while silhouette stays sleek. Finish with statement shoes to make an outfit more bold (e.g. zebra-print, cobalt blue platform shoes or chunky colourful sneakers). Accessories here can either lean more bold or more sleek. Depending on mood or occasion and that either dials it up or down.
