Few places watch a World Cup quite like the UAE. With residents from almost everywhere, nearly every team has a local crowd, and the tournament turns ordinary cafes and living rooms into small pockets of other nations. This summer, two of those crowds are getting louder than usual: the fans of Egypt and Japan.

A home crowd far from home

The UAE is home to one of the largest Egyptian communities outside Egypt, and the Pharaohs have a ready-made support base that needs no convincing. For many families, a World Cup run is a chance to share a piece of home with neighbours and colleagues who have heard about the passion and are about to see it firsthand.

Japan's following is smaller but devoted, and it tends to win over neutrals quickly. The team's discipline and the famous good manners of its supporters, who are known for tidying up after matches, make Japan an easy second team to adopt for the tournament.

Why the underdogs draw a crowd

There is something about a dark horse that pulls in even the uncommitted. Backing a favourite is comfortable; backing a team that might just shock a giant is thrilling. In a city of mixed loyalties, the underdog is the one everyone can cheer for without betraying their own side.

Finding your crowd

The best atmosphere is usually wherever a community gathers: neighbourhood cafes, community centres and friends' living rooms tend to beat any official venue for noise and emotion. If you want the full experience, find the crowd that actually cares about the result, and bring something to share.
